Twenty year old Miss India, Nicole Faria, was crowned as Miss Earth 2010 Saturday, December 4 at the 10th Miss Earth Pageant held in Vinpearl Land, Nha Trang, Vietnam.
Faria beat 83 other contestants from around the world to become the second Asian to win the title. Faria was crowned by outgoing titleholder Miss Earth 2009, Larissa Ramos of Brazil.
Faria also won the Miss Talent, the first special award in the 10th Miss Earth pageant. She performed a graceful belly dance that combined Oriental and Middle Eastern style in an event that raised VND100 million, which was donated to the HCM City Red Cross, to support flood victims in the central region of Vietnam. She wore a shimmering white and gold outfit and defeated 17 other finalists.
The stunning Indian model, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto, bowled over the judges with her beauty, grace and intelligence.
Given a tough question on whether she would save the air or the water first during the Q&A session, the 20-year-old undergraduate thoughtfully said, “Both elements are important to us. But given the choice, I would save water from being polluted for the children.”
First runner-up, Jennifer Pazmino of Ecuador, won the subsidiary title as Miss Earth Air.
Thailand’s Watsaporn Wattanakoon and Puerto Rico’s Yeidy Bosques made it to the Top 4 and were crowned as Miss Earth Water and Miss Earth Fire respectively.
Other finalists included Venezuela, Japan and South Africa.
In the earlier part of the pageant, Miss Guatemala took home the Miss Friendship Award while Miss Photogenic went to Miss Thailand. Miss Japan Marina Kishira won the Miss Earth Best in National Costume award while Miss Guatemala won the Miss Friendship award.
The new Miss Earth will also become a spokesperson for the Miss Earth Foundation, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and other environmental organizations.
The pageant was hosted by Marie Digby, Jennifer Pham and AXN‘s Sony Style host Oli Pettigrew. Guest performances were rendered by Ronan Keating and Vietnamese diva My Linh.
